Amid the global pandemic, the World Car Awards organization managed to name this year’s best cars. Even though the Javits Center in Manhattan, New York, the supposed venue for this year’s New York International Auto Show, the event for the prestigious global car awards’ announcement of winners since 2006, has been converted into a massive intensive care unit for about 3,000 COVID-19 patients, this hasn’t stopped from announcing the winning vehicles thru social media.
World Urban Car
The Kia Soul EV was named the winner for this year’s World Urban Car. The Korean top vehicle bested other contenders, such as the Mini Cooper SE and the Volkswagen T-Cross.
World Performance Car
Meanwhile, from among the popular sports vehicles, the electric prodigy Porsche Taycan rose as this year’s World Performance Car. It topped the category, which consisted of the BMW M8, Toyota GR Supra, Porsche 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4 and the Porsche 911.
World Luxury Car
Again, the Porsche Taycan reigned supreme in this category, beating battery-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC and the Porsche 911.
World Car Design of the Year
The 2020 Mazda3, the first vehicle to feature the Evolved Kodo design, on the other hand, captured the World Car Design of the Year honor. The vehicle’s prestigious styling which exudes elegance in a minimalist form outclassed those from the likes of the Alpine 110S, Peugeot 208 and the favorite Porsche Taycan.
World Car of the Year
Finally, the much-coveted prestigious World Car of the Year honor belonged to the Kia Telluride. It emerged at the top after besting finalists, such as the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Soul EV, Ranger Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz GLB, Volkswagen Golf and T-Cross. It likewise came out the winner among the top three, with the Mazda3 and CX-3 as runners-up.
The World Car Awards is already on its 16th year and its award-giving body is composed of 86 automotive journalists from 24 countries. It serves as an independent entity and is not tied to any publication.
